FREQUENTLY ASKED
General QUESTIONS
1 ARE THERE PENGUINS IN THE TROPICS?
Yes. More than in the Arctic.
2 IS THE SWIM BENCH BETTER THAN SWIMMING?
No. Nothing is better than swimming. But for gaining power, where you can see every stroke or kick in the mirror and seeing the power output on every single stroke, and never missing s drop of force, our accommodating resistance machine are even more specific than swimming.
3 WHY ARE THEY SO BIG?
You must mean our Sprinter’s Paddles. The are big so you HAVE to use your whole body, including your core to power them through the water. We don’t want your hand to move back -- we want your bod to move forward. Got it cheesecake? There are three sizes so you can either graduate down for more turnover into your taper once you have the power, or graduate up as you get stronger and more experienced.
4 I CAN’T SEEM TO KEEP IT UP!
You’re a swimmer, so you must mean your elbow. I’m going to tell you a secret -- no matter how many times your coach tells you to keep that elbow high, you won‘t be able to do what you can’t do. Unless you started at three years old as most great gymnasts do, you’ve got weaknesses somewhere in your stroke and you’ve hit on the most common one. Imagine being able to you a pull-up with your elbows high. Most swimmers don’t catch early enough and many who do don’t do it for long or at full speed. So you have to train that motion -- you have to train your forearms and your shoulder joints to catch early and “medially rotate”. Our favorite way to do this is with accommodating resistance on the bench or on the wall. Tubing gets harder as you get farther from where it’s connected -- the opposite of what happens in the water where it’s harder at the beginning, where people slip the water. Buy at least a $295 Minigym from us you cheapskate and if you are really serious, but a swim bench where you can work every motion of every stroke and the contra-lateral motions that will keep those shoulders healthy too.
5 WHO’S THE BEST COACH IN THE WORLD?
You are. You can feel the pressure. You can learn. You can choose to make good pain your friend and to rest and eat well between practices. A swim coach is simply there to teach you the principles. If you have twenty people in your training group you get three minutes each hour to work on stroke and character development, etc. You’d better see yourself as a fantastic coach if you’re going to be good at anything. That said, find the very best mentor who truly cares about you so you can get the instruction and feedback that is so valuable to your success. And then treat him or her really well. People do more for those who are passionate abut their sport.
